ANGLING

It is essential that an angler acquires a rod licence to fish in either 'coarse' or 'game' fisheries on The North Coast. Licences are available at designated tackle shops.
An additional permit charge may also be required before the angler can fish in particular water. This can be issued by the fishery owner. There are three categories of fisheries:

  • The Public Angling Estate - managed by the Dept of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Inland Fisheries Division (Tel: 028 9025 8825). To fish in these waters a rod licence and a DCAL fishing permits are required. The permit can be bought from tackle shops.
  • Private Angling Waters - a permit and rod licence are required to fish in these privately owned waters.
  • Undeveloped Waters - the permission of the landowner and a rod licence are required to fish in these waters. No further permit is required.

Bann System Ltd. operates angling beats on the main Lower Bann River. It has also sub-let all of the tributary rivers to local angling clubs.

CYCLING

Occasional or novice cyclists may simply wish to spend a day-trip visiting well known attractions while on holiday on the North Coast. More experienced enthusiasts will typically complete the long distance mapped routes. These are as follows:

Belfast to Ballyshannon (242 miles) - NCN Routes 9, 91, 92 & 95
Ballyshannon to Ballycastle (236 miles) - NCN Routes 91, 92 & 93

A significant section of the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 93 passes through the north of the Borough. It is readily identified by distinctive signage.
Substantial sections of this route, linking Downhill, Coleraine, Portstewart, Portrush and Bushmills/Portballintrae, offer superb coastal scenery and are along traffic-free cycle paths. These sections are suitable for novice cyclists and families with young children. Experienced cyclists may choose to venture off the signed routes and explore the countryside at their leisure.

A cycling leaflet highlighting the above entitled “Cycling in the Borough of Coleraine" is available from tourist information centres.

Other cycling opportunities include two signed cycle routes centred on Garvagh, part of a network of routes throughout the Sperrins. The “Eagle's Glen Cycle Route" (approx. 15 miles) explores the historic Errigal landscape centred on the picturesque Glenullin Valley, providing cyclists with superb views of the northern Sperrins foothills.

The “Bann Valley Cycle Route" (approx. 15 miles), linking Garvagh and Kilrea, enables cyclists to enjoy the quiet country roads traversing the fertile landscape of the Bann Valley, with views of the Bann corridor and beyond towards the Antrim Hills. The busy rural market towns of Garvagh and Kilrea offer opportunities to explore local heritage and culture and enjoy traditional hospitality.

For more details about the various NCN routes and maps available visit www.sustrans.org.uk or ask for details at Coleraine Tourist Information Centre.
For further information contact Council's Countryside Development Officer at (028) 7034 7234 or email mark.strong@colerainebc.gov.uk

WALKING

The Borough of Coleraine offers a varied range of excellent walking opportunities for walkers of all abilities.

The range of spectacular coastal walks includes the following: Downhill Beach, Downhill Estate, Castlerock Beach, Portstewart Strand, Portstewart Cliff Path, the Port Path, West Bay and East Strand (Portrush), the White Rocks and Portballintrae.

Additionally there are several riverside routes in both urban and rural locations and opportunities also exist to walk in many forests throughout the area.

Hill walking is catered for in the south of the Borough at Glenullin, where two waymarked trails enable walkers to experience rural life in the tranquillity of the North Sperrin's foothills (see page x for details).

For those walkers looking for a challenge, the Ulster Way and the Causeway Coast Way traverse the north of the Borough. Both of these long distance walks follow a broadly similar waymarked route hugging the coastline where possible.
The Causeway Coast Way follows a waymarked route along the spectacular north coast of Ulster between Portstewart in the west and Ballycastle in the east (signed in one direction only, from west to east). It passes through the Causeway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a World Heritage Site, at the Giant's Causeway and several Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI's).
This 52km (33 mile) route incorporates the Port Path between Portstewart and Portrush (see page x), and the Causeway/North Coast footpath, both of which constitute the Ulster Way in this part of the Province.
The route offers opportunities for enjoyment to walkers of varied abilities from those who aim to walk the whole way to those who prefer to wander along shorter sections.
Car parking is available along the entire route, both in the towns and villages and at specific parking/view points along the coast. The Causeway Coast is accessible by train and bus services (The 'Causeway Rambler' bus service [service 376] operates during the summer months).
