Neighbourhood Renewal

Coleraine Borough Council is now the Lead partner assisting DSD deliver Neighbourhood renewal on the ground.

Neighbourhood Renewal covers 2 areas in Coleraine:

  1. Ballysally & Millburn
  2. Churchlands.

What is Neighbourhood Renewal?

Neighbourhood Renewal has been highlighted by Government as a long-term programme based approach to tackle deprivation and close the quality of life gap within the 10% most deprived wards in Northern Ireland.  Neighbourhood Renewal was devised by Government departments to fill 'the quality of life' gap in people's lives and to better target Government resources. The Department for Social Development (DSD) has overall responsibility for implementing the Neighbourhood Renewal strategy across Northern Ireland.

Neighbourhood Renewal has 4 themes:

  • Community renewal to develop confident communities;
  • Economic renewal to develop economic activity including education and small businesses;
  • Social renewal to improve social conditions through better co-ordinated public services and safer neighbourhoods;
  • Physical renewal to create attractive environments which are safe.

Impact in Coleraine

There are Working Groups set up in each area: Churchlands Working Group and Ballysally/Millburn Working Group.  Each group will look at actions for improvements in each area along the above 4 themes.  Each group will be made up of the community sector, business sector, voluntary and statutory members working to deliver services.
Any suggested actions/services will be fed into a Partnership Board made up of the same sector representation but at a more senior level to advise if these actions can be funded through Neighbourhood Renewal or pursued by other means.

Coleraine Borough Council employs a Neighbourhood Renewal Co-ordinator to oversee all developments and structures.  For more information telephone: 028 7034 7067
